The Environment Agency established the Iceland Conservation Volunteers (Sjálfboðaliðar Umhverfisstofnunar) to assist with the practical management of national parks and nature protection areas throughout the country. Full details about the volunteer projects and information about how to join them can be found on the Environment Agency website. This page has been created by the ICV team to add to our information pages with advice and support from experienced volunteers. As well as keeping you up to date with developments in the programme, this page will be used to share ideas and prepare for the summer projects. We will include tips to help save on cost and pack weight.

Pack Like A Pro

Whether you choose a rucksack or a basecamp duffel carried as a rucksack this packing strategy should help you pack smarter.

Heavy Gear – This should sit as close to your lower back – your centre of gravity – as possible. This is known as the ‘loadstable’area. But remember if it’s raining when you arrive at your campsite it’ll be a pain fishing through your dry gear to get to your tent, so if your rucksack has a bottom zip opening, pack your tent behind it.

Light Gear – Place towards the outer walls of your rucksack, furthest from your body. This is the ‘load-unstable’ area and kit here is least likely to have an effect on your centre of gravity.

In-between Gear – Spread everything else evenly between the top and bottom and across the full width of your pack to help your balance.
